Shep Rose: Ayahuasca Broke My Party Life
Southern Charm’s Shep Rose sits down at his family’s South Carolina farm with Mary O'Neill Phillips from the Country Outdoors Podcast to talk about a life lived hard: reality TV fame, party life, ayahuasca, fly fishing, surfing, and chasing adventure all over the world. From Alaska and Patagonia to Cuba, Fiji, Costa Rica and Christmas Island, Shep shares how the outdoors, the ocean, and one powerful psychedelic experience forced him to re‑think excess and what actually matters. In this episode we dive into: – Growing up on generational land, hunting ducks and deer with his dad and grandfather – How he fell in love with fly fishing in Alaska and chased giant trout, salmon, bonefish, tarpon and permit from Patagonia to Cuba and the Bahamas – The surf trips that took him to Bali, Fiji, Costa Rica, French Polynesia and Christmas Island – Why the ocean, marshes and wild places feel like home and keep him grounded – The ayahuasca retreat in Costa Rica that became a true “psychedelic reckoning” with his party lifestyle, alcohol, and always looking for the exit. The party life and constant travel started to feel empty, the moment Andy Cohen from Bravo warned him he was going to lose everything, how fear and anxiety finally broke through the noise – Writing his new book “Nothing in Moderation: A Psychedelic Reckoning with Excess” and what he hopes people take from it. If you love hunting, fly fishing, surfing, travel, and honest conversations about mental health, excess, and second chances, this one is for you.

Everything Burned… Except the Bible
For our 100th episode of Country Outdoors, I wanted to sit down and actually tell my story — not just the highlight reel. I grew up in Australia between the beach and the bush, and years later I moved to the other side of the world with about $5,000 and no real plan. No backup. No guarantees. Just a pull to build something. This episode is about what happened after that. Losing my dad changed everything for me. It forced me to rethink why I was doing any of this in the first place — and whether it actually meant anything beyond myself. This podcast became one of the few things that gave me purpose during that time. Along the way, there have been moments that tested everything — including the night our camper burned down in South Dakota, losing gear, almost losing our dog, and realizing very quickly that nobody was coming to save us. But even in that, there were moments I can’t explain any other way than faith. Everything burned... except my Bible I talk about building Country Outdoors, learning how to tell real stories, becoming a mom, and how that completely changed the way I look at time, hunting, and life in general. I also share what I’ve learned the hard way — about grief, marriage, growing up, turning 40, and the reality that nobody owes you anything. If you want a life like this, you have to show up for it.
